Container Transport Business

Rail Freight Transport System and the Role of Our Containers

Rail Freight Transport System

Freight forwarding companies become the contact point for customers (shippers) in the rail freight transport system to pick up (collect) and deliver freight using trucks hauling containers for rail freight transport to the closest freight terminal.
Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight) transports the containers loaded onto freight trains to a freight terminal closest to the destination.
Upon arrival, the freight forwarding companies deliver the containers loaded back onto trucks to their destination.

Role of the Container Transport Business in Rail Freight Transport

There are two types of railroad-use containers for transporting the freight of our customers: the generic containers owned by the Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight), and the containers owned by private corporations such as ours. Even in regards to our privately owned containers, the JOT Container Transport Business provides rental and leasing systems for containers that are ideal for general freight and freight requiring temperature control.
The rental system provides each freight forwarding company with various container options made available at freight terminals based on demand according to customer freight transport orders (companies return the containers at a freight terminal closest to the destination after delivery).
The leasing system provides shippers and freight forwarding companies a way to freely use specialized containers (various wrapping is also available) throughout the term of a lease.
Drawing on our many years of container transport experience, we have developed a number of different containers which meet a wide variety of demands, allowing us to provide the most suitable containers possible.

Benefits of Rail Freight Transport

(1) Highly efficient, low-cost transport of a large volume of freight
A 26-car freight train can transport 130 standard-sized containers-equivalent to 650 tons of freight-using rail freight transport. The same volume of transport by road would require 65 ten-ton trucks. Rail freight transport enables large-volume transport with a minimal staff, which can offer larger transport cost reductions over longer distances in addition to helping alleviate concerns about the lack of long-distance truck drivers.

(2) Railway network with coverage throughout Japan
Approximately 140 freight terminals throughout Japan offering our containers provides rail transport coverage throughout Japan. Upwards of 500 freight trains per day transport freight to each corner of the nation. This amounts to a distance of 190,000 kilometers, or roughly five laps around the Earth.

(3) Contribution to reduction of environmental impact
Rail freight transport produces about one-tenth of the CO2 emissions per ton of freight each kilometer compared to that of trucks, which makes it an eco-friendlier means of transport than the various other transportation methods.

Rental Containers

Active contributions to a modal shift achieve functional and efficient distribution through a variety of containers right for each application.

The rental container system provides containers at a freight station nearest to the location for freight pickup, which can then be returned at a freight station closest to the destination. This creates a service that lets freight forwarding companies use the right number and type of containers only when necessary. Any customer (shipper) interested in transporting freight using our containers may contact the nearest JR Freight office or freight forwarding company.

Refrigerated Containers

・12-ft Refrigerated Containers

These containers take advantage of insulation materials for cold/heat performance as an ideal means to transport produce and other items requiring temperature control.

・12-ft Reinforced Refrigerated containers

These containers take advantage of a vacuum insulation panel for higher thermal insulation than refrigerated containers as an ideal means to transport items requiring even stricter temperature control.
